First thing’s first. She is marrying you — not the ring. The ring is just a symbol of the love that you have for her. Regardless of the ring – she will love the fact that you’re ready to take your relationship to the next level.

I get it. You want the ring to be perfect and what she dreams of. But how can you make it perfect? Well, the easiest way to get her something you know she is going to love is to let her pick it out herself. But where is the surprise in that? Many of you don’t want her to know every detail of the engagement so you choose to go the secretive route and take the ring shopping into your own hands…literally.

Pay Attention: Your girlfriend could be giving you clues everyday on what style of ring she prefers. What kind of jewelry does she always wear? Is it simple and elegant or dramatic and detailed? Maybe she doesn’t wear much jewelry at all. Perhaps in this case, a solitaire would be a good choice for her. Always be mindful of what she’s wearing.

Silver or Gold: If you’ve done any engagement ring research, you know there are more options than “Silver or Gold.” Typically your options include Platinum, White Gold, Yellow Gold, or Rose Gold. You can at least get a good idea where her preferences lie. Look at her jewelry collection. Is it typically in the “Silver Family” or “(Yellow) Gold Family.” If you see mostly “silver” jewelry for example – stick with a White Gold or Platinum setting.

Examples: If you have friends or family around who have recently gotten engaged – what were her reactions to the ring? Better yet – did you get a good look at the ring? You’ll want to make sure you know what the ring looked like so you know what it is that she liked…or didn’t like. You can also do some casual shopping. One day while out and about, stop in at a jewelry store to look for a holiday gift for your mom or maybe a new watch for yourself. As you look around, stop by the engagement rings. As she ooh’s and ahh’s over certain styles, take mental notes.

Use Your Resources: A few weeks ago we had a young man in looking to buy an engagement ring for his girlfriend. Like you, he wasn’t quite sure exactly what she liked. One of our associates had asked him if his girlfriend used the online social site – Pinterest. Sure enough, she did. Like many girls – she had pinned many engagement rings – one that we had the identical style in the store (which he ended up buying!) Does your girlfriend use Pinterest? Check out her boards to see if they can clue you in to what she likes. (You can search her boards without even being signed in and she’ll never know!)

Friends and Family: Sometimes your best resource will be your girlfriends best friend or sister or maybe even her mother. Take them shopping with you to help out during the process. Just be sure they can keep a secret!

Size: This can be a tricky one because if you’re going for the ultimate surprise, you may not want to just come out and ask her. Is there a ring (that you know fits her ring finger) that she doesn’t wear often and you could secretly borrow it for a day? If so, take this in to your jeweler and have them measure it. But maybe that’s not the case and you don’t have a ring you can sneak away from her. Try to use her family and friends to do some dirty work for you. Maybe they already know that she has the same size finger as them. Or maybe they can ask to borrow a ring and ask what size it is. (Girls talking about rings and ring sizes isn’t nearly as suspicious as you would be!) Still no luck? When in doubt, use your best judgement. It’s better to go too big than too small. Rings can easily be sized by your jeweler.

Budget: Know your budget and be educated. Once you know what your girlfriend likes, you can start shopping for settings and diamonds. Make sure you research diamond education tools so you can be an educated buyer and make sure your diamond is certified by a reputable lab such as the EGL or the GIA. Many times, you can juggle the 4 C’s (Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight) to get a diamond that will work in your price range. For example, perhaps the diamond of her dreams is a little larger than you had planned. Moving down from “Colorless” to “Near Colorless” diamonds can help save you some money – but will still look beautiful to the naked eye. It’s important to know and trust your jeweler. They can help you tremendously when it comes to picking out the perfect stone and working within the budget that you have.

That being said – good luck with your search and congratulations on your (upcoming!) engagement!

Okay…so let’s talk about the K-Dash wedding! The gowns, the jewels, the cake! Oh my…

Newlywed, Kim Kardashian, (now Mrs. Humphries) wore a custom Ivory Vera Wang Dress at her late August ceremony. (So did all of her bridesmaids…who else other than her sisters). Kim’s dress was hand pieced with Chantilly lace on the bodice and train. The same went for her second dress of the evening…an Ivory mermaid gown. There are reports of a third gown, but to me…the first one was the most important.

The jeweler of the special evening was Lorraine Schwartz. Kim wore approximately 10 million dollars worth of borrowed jewels. A gorgeous 65 carat Diamond Head piece estimating $2.5 million dollars, and a pair of pear shaped diamond drop earrings said to be worth $5 million dollars and weighing in at an astonishing 28 carats! Now, her actual engagement ring and wedding band um, WOW…here’s the breakdown:

-20.50 carats in total featuring a 16.50 carat emerald cut center stone flanked by two 2.00 carat side diamonds
-Laced with secret bible passages
-Valued at $2 million (which could feed a small country and possibly blind someone).

I believe that an engagement ring is an investment. Not only is it a symbol of love and commitment, but a valued piece to a women’s jewelry collection that she looks at each and every single day. It makes a statement, and stands for something! But love cannot be bought. It’s not about the size of the diamond, or the setting. It’s about what it stands for and what it means to you.

Lastly, the wedding band is even more ostentatious…it’s a 12 carat Platinum diamond eternity band with an estimated price tag of $60,000. So all in all, totaling 32.50 carats on one finger! It’s amazing and little much. But I guess in the socialite/celebrity world, anything goes.

Mrs. Humphries; with her amazing custom made gown(s), her abundant amount of bling, had to top off her special day with a ten tiered wedding cake that stood 6 feet tall! (Yeah…I’m 5 foot – 5’4 on a good day in heels.) The couple reportedly wanted their cake to resemble Price William and Kate Middleton’s…and spent approximately $15,000 trying to do so. Let’s think about this a little bit:

$15, 000 could A) buy you a Ford Focus = fully loaded, or B) pay for 1 full year of college tuition. Seriously!?!

But again, for or us realists, we all know that we are talking about a celebrity wedding, which in their minds, they are looking forward to those 5 minutes of fame. However, the jewelers to the stars make some irreplaceable and amazing designs just the same. Lorrain Schwartz will forever be remembered for the rings and other jewels worn on Kim Kardashian’s special day. It almost got as much, if not more exposure than The Royal Wedding. So finally we wish all the best to the happy couple, and let’s hope that this one will last.

One quote I found in my research from Twitter… “Here’s to Kim Kardashian’s Wedding & Fortune. Proof to children everywhere that if you set your mind to nothing, you can accomplish anything.”

A few days ago I was asked to write about my experience of rappelling down the Key Bank Building in downtown Dayton. At first I cringed because I really don’t like to talk about myself, or what I do for charity because I don’t do it to be recognized – I do it to give back. Then, I thought about it a while and I realized that this could be fun. On September 16th, 2011 in conjunction with Urban Nights, a group of close to 70 people (including myself) thought it would be a fun idea to rappel 27 stories (375 feet above the Earth) for charity. The event was called “Over the Edge” and it was a new and creative fundraiser that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami Valley came up with. The idea was to raise $1,000 each and if a member did that, they could go “Over the Edge”.

I first heard about the idea from a friend of mine’s Facebook page (thanks social media). He was posting a link to ask for donations for this event. Of course me being the guy who always wants to try and help, I clicked on the link. As I read further, I found out what charity it was for. Then, I realized, “Wow, I can help a charity AND conquer a major fear of mine.” So I decided to sign up. That was just the beginning for me. I kept reading about Big Brothers Big Sisters because I had obviously heard of them, but never really knew exactly what they did. Turns out, they are a more-than-wonderful “Non for Profit” organization. They help match kids who need role models in their lives with adults in the community that will hang out with them, take them out to things they wouldn’t typically get to do, and in general, be a life role model.

My thinking is now that I can really make a difference. Rather than donating $20, I can raise $1,000 and really make a big difference. They say that a $1,000 donation can actually support a “Big” and a “Little” for an entire year. That’s it!??!?! I can do that; challenge accepted. I began asking friends and family for donations. They didn’t have to be much, $10, $20, whatever they could afford. I’m sure that plenty of my friends started to get annoyed seeing all my Facebook posts about it but I was determined. That’s when all the fun questions started to come in. “Are you out of your mind? Do you have a death wish?” No and no. This was bigger than me, it wasn’t about me. It was about the Foundation. Sure, did I get to conquer a fear of mine, but that was just an added bonus.

I will never forget going “Over the Edge” and I fully plan on doing it again next year. I remember standing on the ledge, leaning back, taking my first backwards steps, and holding onto my ropes for dear life. Doing this was something that reminded me (and every charity or fundraiser I work with), that there are much bigger things than us. My dad always told me that he was proud to have me as his son, but never more so than when I started to give back to Dayton. I will continue to make my dad proud even though he is no longer with me in body. I know he will give me the strength and sense to always, always, give back more than I get.
